711624.JPG (46791 bytes)The University of Vienna is located in the Old Quarter, on the "Ring" or Ringstrasse, a spectacular boulevard which showcases many lavish public and private buildings. The university's history goes back to the 14th century and its International University Courses for language were initiated in 1922 and re-established in 1952.

Courses

Summer Programs:

The International Summer School Program runs from July to mid-September - with two 4-week and one 3-week sessions, up to 11 consecutive weeks. Class hours are about 57 per session, including September.

During the Summer, classes are from 9:00 AM. to noon each weekday, with a total of 15 lessons (50 minutes each) per week. The September session runs from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Classes have no more than 16 students.

Lessons are held at seven levels (beginning to very advanced to proficiency).

Core Curriculum. Grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, conversation, reading and written tests are offered at all levels.

Beginner Level 1 (beginners without any prior knowledge)
Beginner Level 2 (beginners with some prior knowledge)
Beginner Level 3
Advanced Level 1.
Advanced Level 2 (students with good command of German).
Advanced Level 3
Proficiency (for perfection, especially for teachers and students of German abroad)

Language Laboratory

In the afternoon the language laboratory is available and is used for the pronunciation course for a very small fee.

Rooms, videos, textbooks and newspapers are available for self-study in the afternoon.

Year--Round Programs

Three 6-week terms and two 12-week semesters throughout the year. Lessons are held at six levels (beginning to advanced). In addition to the language program, the following specialized courses are offered: Business German, Communication Workshop, Phonetics, and Written German.

In February, a 3-week intensive program is also held.

During the academic year, classes vary in intensity and size: from six to 10 classes per week for terms and 15, for a semester. Some classes may have up to 20 students, while others may have 8-12 participants. Smaller more intense classes cost more.

Language of classes

All classes are taught in German.

Calendar

Students may enroll in consecutive sessions during the summer or year.

There are three six-week terms and two 12-week semesters held beginning mid-October to mid-June. There is also a February session.

Examinations and Certificate

At the end of each course participants can take a written and oral examination, and upon request they can obtain a certificate after having attended classes regularly for one whole session (two absences allowed).

The certificate of Level V or VI replaces the Sprachberechtigungsprüfung of the University of Vienna.

Accommodations

During the summer, participants will have accommodations in student dormitories. Apartments may be available at an extra cost.

Cost

  July 10-August 4, August 7 – September 1 (4-week sessions) - $1350 including tuition, fees and a single room.
  September 4-22 (3-week session) - $1230, including tuition, fees and a single room.
  Semester - $1400, including tuition, registration, assistance with housing and fees.
  Term - $1200, including tuition, registration, assistance with housing and fees.
  February - $900, including tuition, registration, assistance with housing and fees.
 

Excursions

Excursions are offered (at cost) including city tours of Vienna and its surroundings, trips on the Danube, excursions to the alpine and lake districts of Austria such as Lake Neusiedl, Wachau, Mödling-Seegrotte-Gumpoldskirchen, walk through the Vienna woods. It is also easy to travel on your own, using public transportation (city trams and subways for local travel and trains and buses for longer). Salzburg, Graz, Budapest and Prague are within easy reach.

Social events are planned for some evenings (Heuriger and dancing parties). Vienna always offers many cultural and other options. In summer, an open-air film festival takes place on the city hall grounds which are very near the university. Sports include tennis, squash, badminton and gymnastics. These are organized by Österreichische Hochschülerschaft.
