Setting

metro.icon.gif (6698 bytes)Paris is the choice location to study French. The city has defined much of French culture to the world and Paris has dominated the intellectual life of the nation. Moreover, the international importance of the French language and of French thought and action, has lent even greater significance to the expanded role of the capital.

La Sorbonne is France's most prominent educational institution. The university is located in the Latin Quarter on the well-known boulevard which showcases many important public and private buildings. The university's history goes back to the 13th century; it was founded about 1257 and evolved into the University of Paris. Beginning in 1968, in a major reform, the university was decentralized into 13 jardin.lux.2a.gif (17837 bytes)separate components. The Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) offers its courses on French language and civilization in conjunction with the Société des Amis des Universités de Paris.

The university is located on the Left Bank, near the Seine, a district noted for its educational and cultural pursuits that has retained its individual character. Within easy walking distance is the Luxembourg Gardens, a splendid park that was originally for royalty.

La Sorbonne provides a range of academic choices for beginners and those at an intermediate or advanced level, as well as for graduate students and teachers of French. Intensive language courses on all levels are taught by excellent professors and instructors who are trained in teaching their own language to non-native speakers. No previous knowledge French is required; however, some La Sorbonne courses require a very advanced level of French.

Accommodations

Paris' housing has not kept pace with the population growth. Finding suitable and reasonably-priced accommodations is a challenge anytime. Students can make their own housing arrangements or request European Heritage Institute's (EHI) services. EHI will discuss housing options with applicants and help identify the best available accommodations at the time of application that meet needs and preferences. Based on their selection, EHI will provide housing assistance and make arrangements (available at the time of request). It may include a room at the Cité International Universitaire or an apartment.
